IPL 2024: Rinku Singh failed to make India’s 15-man T20 World Cup squad after a few days. The KKR batsman was dismissed after just 9 runs when he walked the bat after falling for the 4th wicket against MI.
Rinku Singh failed to put up an impressive performance in his first outing after the T20 World Cup. Rinku could only score 9 runs in KKR’s match against MI at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on 3 May. BCCI announced India’s 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup and Rinku couldn’t cut the squad. However, he will travel to the US and the Caribbean with the Indian national team as a substitute.
There were high hopes among fans that Rinku would make a statement with his bat after being left out of the T20 World Cup squad. He came to bat early in the innings after KKR’s top order crumbled in the power play.
How was Rinku sent in MI vs KKR?
During the seventh over, MI spinner Piyush Chawla hit his first ball, which resulted in Rinku being caught and dropped. It was a generously tossed delivery from middle to off stump and Rinku stepped in to fire it to mid-wicket. Piyush tempted Rinku as he extended his wicket to the bowler. It was Piyush’s 184th scalp as he surpassed Dwayne Bravo to become the second highest run scorer in IPL history behind Yuzvendra Chahal‘s 200.
Rinku’s wicket reduced KKR to 60 for 5 by the end of the 7th over. The explosive batsman could have used this opportunity to make his mark as other Indian batsmen are limping under the T20 World Cup selection Jinx. Rinku’s omission from the 15-man squad became a big talking point for fans and pundits as they expressed their displeasure with the decision.
BCCI Chief Selector Ajit Agarakar also had to explain that it was not Rinku’s fault but it was the most difficult decision the selectors had to make while picking the team. Team India skipper Rohit Sharma was also seen chatting with Rinku on the eve of the match.
However, the 26-year-old couldn’t start, especially when the team needed him the most. In 10 IPL matches, Rinku managed to score just 132 runs at a strike rate of 146.67 and an average of 18.86.
